The videos title helps broaden the music videos purpose. Cage the Elephant describes the mans (main person throughout the music video) thoughts of his lost ones. His conscious is telling telling him that he alone, everyone he cares about is dead, except his wife. The specific lyrics "my life I have seen people walk into the sea. Just to find memories plagued by constant misery" emphasizes how people like him and his wife look back on the memories of their lost loved ones and live in misery realizing that it is just the two of them. The beginning of the music video portrays these lines with him looking back on photos of his friends and family.
The scene of him running and wondering around emphasizes his subconscious running around not knowing where to turn to. "In my past, bittersweet, there's no love between the sheets
Taste the blood, broken dreams, lonely times in deed" could explain how he feels that between him and his wife he feels the most lonely and depressed about being alone. His dreams are broken because they portray his loved one when they were alive. Bringing the realization that there is no one left. This is portrayed with him crawling around the blankets running into past memories of his with people that he has lost.
"I'll keep my eyes fixed on the sun. Turn back now, it's time for me to let go. Way down, had to find a place to lay low. Lamp shade, turned around into a light post" the "sun" being the light that he sees as he is passing. This point of the music video it is made obvious that the man is dying and that all the memories that he is witnessing is the final moments of his brain re-living his past. It can be interpreted that he feels alone because he is passing away by himself, leaving his wife alone.
The final moment where the lanterns are release is when his spirit has let go and he can now live in peace. He is being sent into heaven where the rest of his loved one lay. No longer have to live in agony because he feels all alone.
